THE Southend skies will come alive with colour later this month, with a kite flying display being held at the Yacht Club Beach.

Hosted by the Wattle Range Council as part of the Wattle Range Giant Kite Festival, the Adelaide Kite Flyers Association (AKFA) will present a kite flying display.

The event is family-friendly, free and is open to kite flyers of all ages and experience levels.

The display will include sea themed kites of all shapes, sizes and designs, and the AKFA will showcase the sea kite designs, many standing over 30 feet high.

Manager community development, Wattle Range Council Caroline Hill said kite flying is a fun activity for all ages, and a great excuse to get outdoors.

“We’re thrilled to partner with AKFA to bring this event to our community and highlight the natural beauty of Southend Beach as the perfect backdrop for such an uplifting display,” she said.

Visitors to the event bring their own kites to fly or there will be the option to build and decorate a kite on-site at one of the festival’s craft activities.

Kite flying lessons and demonstrations will also be offered, to help first-timers discover the joy of kite flying.

AKFA secretary Justine said there will be opportunities for great photos throughout the day.

“The Wattle Range Giant Kite Festival is shaping up to be an unforgettable event and our ground display will have cars that people can stand in for photos,” she said.

“We can’t wait to fill the skies with colour and see the smiles on people’s faces as they stop to look up in wonder”.

The Wattle Range Giant Kite Festival will take place at Yacht Club Beach, Leake Street Beach Access, Southend on Wednesday, 24 January 2024 from 10am to 2pm.

Entry to the festival is free.
