MOUNT GAMBIER CATTLE

Numbers eased in the first sale of the year as agents yarded 1,616 head of liveweight and open auction cattle.

These sold to a large field of trade and processor buyers along with feeder and restocker support.

Quality was mixed which led the buyers to picking their way through the pens in the yearling and vealer sections but the cow offering was excellent in both weight and condition however the market sold to a cheaper trend this week.

Vealer steers to trade buyers ranged from 210c to 275c with similar heifers making from 180c to 270c/kg.

Feeders sought steers from 250c to 270c as heifers sold from 160c to 225c with restocker interest in both sexes from 171c to 270c/kg.

Yearling steers returned from 188c to 232c as heifers sold from 180c to also 232c/kg.

Feeders sought yearling steers from 215c to 225c and heifers to 222c/kg.

Grown steers and bullocks sold to the trade from 244c to 265c with feeder support from 258c to 270c/kg.

Grown heifers attracted the trade from 206c to 248c as manufacturing steers sold to 194c/kg.

Heavy cows were a feature of the sale this week as they sold from 170c to 220c to the trade as lighter lots made from 140c to 185c with restocker activity here from 150c to 205c/kg.

Bulls ranged from 140c to 220c/kg.

MOUNT GAMBIER SHEEP AND LAMB

Numbers fell as agents offered 2,293 lambs and 85 sheep to total a combined 2,378 head overall.

These sold to a small field of active trade and processor buyers along with a number of restocker orders.

Quality was of a wide range from heavy lambs down to light store lots with most sales from 750c to 800c/kg cwt with more in places as the market jumped with strong buyer competition pushing an increase of $10 to $20/head with more in select places.

Light lambs sold to $76 to the trade with light trade lots returning up to $112 as restocker interest sourced most of these lambs from $41 to $122/head.

Tradeweight lambs sold from $140 to $167 as heavy pens made from $168 to $208/head.

Extra heavy lambs received some strong competition to sell from mostly $198 to $228 with the market high reaching $246/head in an isolated sale.

Hoggets ranged from $54 to $85 as sheep sold to $42/head.
