Be on the lookout for fake cash

COUNTERFEIT: Police have warned there could be more counterfeit cash being spent in the Limestone Coast. Picture: Supplied

Police have warned local businesses to be on the lookout for counterfeit notes over the holiday season.

On Saturday, December 30, 2023, a supermarket in Penola discovered a counterfeit $50 note while counting their cash at the end of the day.

The note is excellent quality but stands out as being slightly different when viewed with other $50 notes.

On close inspection of the note the value ($50) was not in the clear window, the coat of arms was not present on the note and the green and red seven-pointed star did not line up when held up to the light.

For more information on what to look for if you suspect you have found a counterfeit note, find the Counterfeit Detection Guide on the Reserve Bank of Australia website.
