The operation saw another seven people reported for firewood theft and 14 expiation notices issued for the unsafe transportation of wood in trailers.

Operation Red Gum is an operation conducted in the Limestone Coast Local Service Area focusing on the illegal harvesting, transport and sale of red gum firewood.

In April 2023, police met with key stakeholders in the forestry industry as well as Department of Primary Industries and Regions South Australia, National Parks and the Wattle Range Council representatives.

During this meeting concerns were raised regarding the large-scale removal of red gum trees from National Parks and heritage areas within pine plantations.

Police wish to thank members of the public who assisted with Operation Red Gum and encourage anyone who sees people acting suspiciously near forest or park areas to contact the Police Assistance Line immediately on 131444.
