SUTTONTOWN’S Trevor and Denise Dent have swept the competition aside and won most categories, including champion bird of show, at the Mount Gambier Pigeon and Poultry Club’s centenary show.

Mr Dent said it was extra special to come away with so many accolades at the centenary show.

“I’ve been here for half of it, I started showing in 1969 and I’ve been here all that time,” he said.

“So when it sinks in it will be much appreciated.”

As well as winning champion bird in show, their bird- a white bantam wyandotte pullet- also won champion bantam, champion soft feather bantam and champion soft feather bantam heavy.

But this was not the only bird owned by the Dent’s that did well in the show.

The couple won reserve champion bird with a white leghorn pullet, which also won champion large fowl, champion light breed large.

“We also won champion water fowl with a pekin duck and then in the modern games we came away with champion modern game and reserve,” he said.

“It was quite a bit, a very good day.”

Mr Dent said this year had been a good one for them in terms of poultry shows.

“I’ve been to eight shows this year, including the Canberra Royal, and out of those eight shows we’ve had six champion bird in show and three reserve champions,” he said.

“I’ve been doing it a long time and my wife, Denise, she’s a great help… we’re both retired now so we’ve got the time and it’s what we do.”

After being involved in the club for 50 odd years Mr Dent said it was emotional to see it reach 100 years.

“It’s hard not to get emotional when you think about all those people [who made the club what it is],” he said.

Next month the Dents are hoping to have more success at the Royal Adelaide and Royal Melbourne Shows, before the Mount Gambier Show in October.
