A LIMESTONE Coast doctor is helping children learn how to keep their bodies healthy through a new book.

Dr Harry James Gaffney has recently published “Tiny Adventures Inside Me: A Journey Into Microbiology“, which explores the relationships between microorganisms inside the human body.

The book was written as a way to educate children on their bodies and how to stay healthy.

“It’s about a kid that finds an orb that shrinks him and he actually ends up shrinking into his own body,“ Dr Gaffney said.

“He explores his own body systems and meets all these viruses and bacteria and microbes on a cellular level and how they interact with this main character’s own body.

“And how he can help them stay healthy so they can help him stay healthy, and how we have a synergistic relationship with our microbial life inside us.“

Dr Gaffney said it was his way of providing a fun way for children to learn a little bit about health and wellbeing.

“If we can get kids to learn more about their health and wellbeing now and have some health education, then maybe they don’t need to go to the doctor as much when they’re hitting adolescence and even less when they’re into their geriatrician years,“ he said.

“I love microbiology – not many people do, it’s not a part of medicine that people are too interested in, so I also like getting people interested in that as well.

“This is all about educating kids on microbiology … and the things they can do to keep their little microbes healthy so they can keep their bodies healthy as well.“

He said all proceeds from the book will go towards the Children’s Research Foundation and other charities that work on improving child healthcare and education.
