THE members of the Kalangadoo branch of Women in Agriculture and Business South Australia (WAB) are getting ready to commemorate a significant milestone.

The group will be celebrating its 100th year in August and, while member numbers are down, that is not stopping them from making big plans to mark the occasion.

Kalangadoo WAB president Sandra Young said despite only having four to five members over the last few years, they are “hanging in there” to make sure the 100th year celebrations happen.

“We didn’t want to dissolve or anything like that because we knew our 100th year was coming up,” Ms Young said.

“We’re very excited that it’s now happening.”

Ms Young said people can expect a range of fun activities on the day, including a murder mystery play, music and great costumes.

“We’ve got a whole day planned with the theme of the 1920s, so we’re hoping people will come dressed up,” Ms Young said.

“We’re going to have high tea with a couple of butlers who are getting dressed up, we’re going to have jazz-type music.”

Kalangadoo WAB will also be acknowledging the history of the group and the women who started it all with a roll call for the founding members.

“In the roll call, we’ll mention a sentence about each of them,” Ms Young said.

“If there’s any relatives, and we’re trying to trace these relatives, they can be acknowledged and hopefully have a little gift for them.

“After those 16 [founding members], we’ll go through the years and people who have had members within those years, they can be acknowledged.”

Ms Young said it was important to recognise the dedication of all the previous members of the group.

“Looking back, you can see how the WAB ladies have been helping the community throughout history,” she said.

“They’ve always been there, they’ve never folded – even during the war.”

The centenary celebrations will begin at 9.30am on Wednesday, August 9 at the Riddoch Memorial Institute Hall in Kalangadoo.
