CANCER support groups will band together on Wednesday, May 3 to help reach a broader audience.

A total of 14 stallholders will come together at the RSL Bowling Club with a variety of information available.

Cancer Support Group member Lorraine Musgrove said the idea for the forum came after the support group became aware clients did not know what services were available locally.

“We have had clients who we have supported who have said they did not know there were support groups around the Limestone Coast,” Ms Musgrove said.

“Some have not even been aware there was a Patient Transport System office here in Mount Gambier or about the accommodation available at Greenhill Lodge in Adelaide.”

Ms Musgrove said it could be difficult for clients to find accurate information when diagnosed with cancer.

“This is what put into our minds to host a forum as we have to get this information out there about the care available for cancer patients but it can also be family or friends that want to know the information too,” she said.

“We are hoping we can get the information about the support groups out to the community because on average we support a number of clients.

“Sometimes this may be for information or other times it could be financial support if they need it.”

She said the support groups were also hoping the forum would help clients realise the amount of support available for those with cancer.

“It is important to support people through their journey and everyone needs support in a different way,” Ms Musgrove said.

“I think each support group has individual support which is so important and some people do not want to talk about their cancer journey, but they just want friendship and support.”

The event will begin at 2pm on Wednesday, May 3 and finish at 6pm with several guest speakers on the day.
