THE Blue Lake Aero Modellers (BLAM) have substituted the infinite skies for the Wulanda Recreation and Convention Centre for their inaugural indoor flying event.

BLAM secretary Jim Jasper said the group has existed since before 1960 under various names and titles giving members the opportunity to fly a range of aircraft varying from simple toys to advanced radio controlled vehicles.

Mr Jasper said when Wulanda first opened, the group thought it would be the perfect place to host an event like this.

“People have made smaller aircraft which were lighter in weight and with less power so they could be flown in indoor areas,” Mr Jasper said.

“The idea is that we get to fly properly but also we mainly want to show people in Mount Gambier there are other things to do, to broaden people’s horizons.”

Mr Jasper said there was no age limit to who could fly the aircraft and encouraged people to come and watch what the event was about.

“It is a hobby which has been around for a very long time, it’s not a bunch of people playing with toy aeroplanes,” he said.

“Although some of them do start off as simple toys, they can get right up to flying quarter scale helicopters and jets and all sorts of model aircraft.

“It can be a very consuming hobby but we do have members of all genders and ages.”

Those interested in joining the Blue Lake Aero Modellers for their indoor flying events can call Mr Jasper on 0417 959 996 or by attending the event itself at Wulanda on the third Friday of every month.
