While welcoming students to the new school year this week, Mulga Street Primary School will also welcome a new principal.

Anna Copping has taken on the top job and is excited to see the year unfold.

“I am slightly nervous, but also really excited- the staff have been really welcoming and supportive here, they’re all very committed to making sure we can provide the best education that we can,” she said.

The new principal said she knew how hard it could be for parents to send their children to school for the first time, but she assured they were in good hands.

“Obviously their children are the most valuable thing to them and they’re handing them over probably for the first time and I can understand that that would be making some parents feel a little bit nervous but they need to be reassured that Mulga has prepared really well for their students and the transition is pretty seamless,” she said.

“I imagine that there’s some nervous students starting, we’ve got some foundation students starting, but we’ve also got four new teachers, so students will be nervous but excited to meet their new teachers.”

Ms Copping brings years of experience to her new role, having previously been principal at Penola Primary School.

“I’m excited for the opportunities that coming to Mulga Street brings, they’ve got wonderful programs already in place here and I’m looking forward to building on that,” she said.

She was keen to keep reading high on the agenda and introduce a few new programs throughout the school, and also foster the schools relationship with the Children’s Centre.

“I’m really passionate about early years education and making sure there’s a continuity of learning right from three-year-olds up to 11 and 12-year-olds and so I’m really looking forward to that,” she said.

Ms Copping said she was looking forward to seeing Mulga Street flourish in 2023.

“I think Mulga is really well positioned to do some great things within our school and within our community, we’ve got a very supportive governing council, our staff are very committed to making sure that we are doing the best that we can do and always looking to improve, so I think there’s great opportunity here to be really successful,” she said.
