Mount Gambier residents came out in force to celebrate Australia Day and people doing great things for the community.

The day kicked off bright and early at the Cave Gardens/Thugi with local musicians entertaining the crowd and the Lakes Rotary Club cooking breakfast – with proceeds being donated to South Australia Police’s Law Enforcement Torch Run.

City of Mount Gambier mayor Lynette Martin said it was great to see so many people come out to celebrate and congratulate the Australia Day Award recipients.

“So many residents in the Mount Gambier community show community support and spirit, and it is a real delight to acknowledge their efforts to give back to the community as part of the Citizen of the Year Awards,” she said.

“The recipients of the 2023 awards, along with all of those nominated, contribute to the advancement and well-being of our community in Mount Gambier, and the whole city should be proud of their achievement.”

Award recipients were:

Citizen of the Year – Graham Carter OAM

Senior Citizen of the Year – Allen Woodham OAM

Young Citizen of the Year – Zane Serdarovic

Community Event of the Year – Fantasy Medieval Festival

Active Citizenship Award – the Blue Lake Highland Pipe Band

For the first time, the event was interpreted in Auslan and accessible matting was laid to accommodate wheelchair access on the lawns.
