Financial Educator and Money Expert Vanessa Stoykov has shared some Back to School Tips.

“As a mum of three boys, I know how challenging shopping for a new school year can be,” she said.

“After the holiday season and with more families feeling financial pressure heading into 2023, my advice is to plan ahead, shop online and shop early to make sure you’re getting the best deals.

“With a clear plan, you can invest in quality items that will last the year ahead, while also saving money on supplies we all know kids will inevitably lose, break or wear out!”

Vanessa’s tips:

-Buy in bulk when the savings are good. When you see a bargain, it’s smart to grab an extra one you know you will need later down the track. Buying on sale and storing it can save you serious dollars in the long run. But remember, it’s only good value if you can afford it at the time.

-Buy bigger, so it lasts longer. While it’s not recommended to do with items like shoes, with clothes, it is often smart to go up a size. Kids grow fast, so having slightly baggy uniforms for a little while can pay off.

-Shop online. This will allow you to focus on shopping for the things you need and nothing you don’t. When shopping online at BIG W, you can select “Pick up” your order from your local store for no extra fee, saving you both time and money.

-Change your language. Instead of saying, “Do not lose this” to your kids, say something like… “You’ve grown up a lot this year. I bet you are going to be so much more careful”. Or “You make me so happy when you bring home your lunch box!” Positive language really works to encourage positive behaviour.

-Shop to your values as well as looking for value. What is important to you and your family? Once you cut out the noise of what everyone is doing, it makes spending a lot more targeted. You can look for good value in products that align to you and your kids needs.
