DOG owners in the Limestone Coast are being encouraged to keep their furry friends on leads over summer to help protect vulnerable species in the region.

Limestone Coast Landscape Board (LCLB), through the Our Coorong | Our Coast project, has called on people to “take the lead” to look after local shorebirds.

Our Coorong | Our Coast project coordinator Robbie Andrew said keeping dogs on a lead at the beach is a simple action all people can take to protect vulnerable shorebirds.

“Shorebird eggs are extremely hard to see on the sand and therefore can easily be damaged,” he said.

“By keeping your dog on a lead you will help protect our feathered friends while they feed, nest and rest during this season.”

People can also protect shorebirds by keeping an eye out for signage to make sure they avoid protected areas, and by walking on the water’s edge to reduce the risk of accidentally stepping on eggs.

LCLB will be distributing free dog leads to the public over December and January.
