HUNDREDS of people headed to the Glenburnie Racecourse last week to have a ball at the annual Pink Party.

On Friday, October 21, Mount Gambier’s Breast Cancer Awareness Group hosted its Pink Party to show the community a good time and raise vital funds to help in the fight against cancer.

Around 200 people attended and, through a combination of auctions, raffles and ticket sales, the Group managed to raise around $15,000 which Group chair Jill Gilmore said will go back towards the community.

“We’ll be able to buy a lot of helping hand bags with this, which will go locally,” Ms Gilmore said.

“We’re just in awe of everyone’s generosity.

“It’s just locals supporting locals, really.”

The prizes on the night were locally donated and ranged from luxury weekends away to food and wine packages.

Ms Gilmore said that, beyond raising a lot of money, the Olivia Newton-John-themed event was just a good time for all involved and a good chance to blow off some steam.

“It was quite rowdy and we loved that because it meant everybody was having a good time,” she said.

“The whole night was very noisy with dancing and laughing, and just enjoying lots of women in a room for the same purpose of raising money for a good cause.

“Most people did dress up, we had a couple of best dressed with a John Travolta and an Olivia ‘let’s get physical’, so we gave those two awards.”

Ms Gilmore said there was nothing negative to come out of the evening and everyone had “the best time”.

She also said while she was glad to see the community raise so much money, it was also fantastic to have everyone united under the one banner.

“It’s also about getting women together for the same cause,” she said.

“Everyone has been affected by breast cancer, whether it be yourself, a loved one or a friend.

“So everybody relates to what an awful rollercoaster ride it is if you’re ever a part of it.”
