Sandbag pods to help in flood emergencies

PREPARING FOR FLOOD: Sandbags will be available in the Limestone Coast area.

THE State Government has announced the installation of “self-serve” sandbag pods across the region to help locals in the event of flooding emergencies.

Each pod will be able to hold up to 80 sandbag packs, which will consist of 10 empty sandbags, plastic sheeting and an instruction card.

The sandbag pods come through Federal Government funding given to the South Australian State Emergency Service (SASES) as part of the Strong Communities Programme.

Three of the pods will be installed in the Limestone Coast area, with one at the Mount Gambier SES Unit, and the others set for the Millicent SES Unit and Naracoorte.

Minister for Emergency Services Joe Szakacs said the need for these sandbag pods has been clearly demonstrated by recent flooding events.

“We know in emergency situations such as the flooding South Australia has experienced recently that preparation is key to protecting homes, property and lives,” he said.

“Heading towards a third consecutive La Niña weather pattern, the installation of the new pods couldn’t have come at a better time.

“I’m incredibly proud to be supporting SASES in this important initiative that will see accessible sandbag pods installed across the state.”

SASES chief officer Chris Beattie said the pods will play a big part in helping people prepare ahead of heavy rains and possible flooding events.

“By being prepared, people can help minimise the impact of severe storms,” he said.

“Having a flood action plan, preparing an emergency kit and taking some simple steps around your home can play a large part in minimising or preventing the impact of storm damage.”
