THE Department for Energy and Mining (DEM) has met with local residents to discuss a potential expansion to limestone mine in Compton.

Sandy Ridge is seeking to expand its current operation in Compton, with an application pending to extend its mining capabilities. The business also undertakes landfill, skip hire and scrap metal services.

The Grant District Council in March provided ‘in principle’ support to DEM after they requested a response to an application from Sandy Ridge Mining to expand their quarry and secure access to another 100 years of limestone.

Nearby residents in Compton have opposed the expansion since finding out about the application, stating it would impact their quality of living property and calling out a claimed lack of consultation.

Since the complaints, both the Grant Council and DEM have arranged meetings with the residents to consult on the application.

Leighton Neill said the meeting was productive, and he along with his fellow residents, said they were pleased to be able to have their say in the process.

“She listened to what we had to say…it will be an ongoing process,” Mr Neill said.

The residents in opposition have made their submissions about the project, with Sandy Ridge able to respond to complaints put forward by the residents in the coming weeks.

An outcome on the project is not expected until later in the year, as decided by DEM.
