Men finish runners-up at State Championships

STRONG DEFENCE: Tigers' Connor Grant put in a strong defensive performance for the Lower South East during the Country Championships on the weekend.

IT was a strong weekend for the Lower South East Men’s team as it finished runners-up in the annual hockey State Championships.

LSE had a strong start to the championships as it won all but one game in the minor rounds.

With only one draw for the weekend, the team faced Barossa in the final.

The final was fast-paced and Barossa broke the deadlock midway through the first half from a penalty corner.

Barossa continued to put LSE under pressure in the final five minutes of the half, but the Lower South East held on to head into the break down by one goal.

Connor Grant remained strong in defence to help prevent Barossa from extending its lead.

With 10 minutes left in the game, David Vine was able to hit Jordan Millhouse from the other side of the field.

Millhouse then made the most of the opportunity as he beat the keeper to draw the game level.

This set up an exciting conclusion to the final, where both sides had chances to claim the championship.

However, with less than five minutes remaining, Barossa was awarded a penalty corner, which they converted.

The Lower South East was unable to find another equaliser and Barossa claimed the title in a thrilling finale.
