Grant High School takes a trip through time

LEAD ROLES: Grant High School studenst Matthew Cross, Daisy Stevens, Dakota Caines, Robert Pickin and Bryce Cowland are ready to take to the stage in Musical She Wrote next week.

GRANT High School are taking a trip through time with their musical Musical She Wrote.

The performance will be a throwback to musical’s past, in an homage to more than four decades of performances by the school.

Director Abbey Marston-Kleemann said she wrote the musical to pay tribute to the past.

“I always liked the idea of doing an amalgamation of all the different musicals, because I think what Grant have done over the past 46 years is pretty cool,” she said.

“They have done some really epic musicals, from Grease, to the Pyjama Game, to Leader of the Pack to Back to the 80s.”

“I loved the idea of throwing them all together, but just doing the songs wasn’t enough, I had to intertwine it with the storyline, with the idea of wanting to connect somehow – with Covid we lost so much connection, and when I go to the theatre, It is so important to connect with what’s happening on the stage.”

The musical tells the tale of a family from the perspective of the grandparents and takes the audience through time with musical numbers from performances past.

“It came from the idea of how this family came about, and it’s the storyline of Nan and Pop and how mum and dad got together and then how the kids come along,” she said.

“There are lots of throwbacks and flashbacks.”

There have been some challenges along the way, with Covid wreaking havoc on rehearsals.

“It’s been interesting since we’ve had a lot of changes along the way – we’ve had understudies thrown up to leads, understudies of understudies.

“We have half a cast at the moment.”

“We’ve made it work but it’s been interesting.

“Auditions had to be online but it was really cool for us, because we could go back and rewatch them.”

there will be two performances on June 29 and 30 at 7.30pm at the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre.
