Limestone Coast rally win

LIMESTONE Coast competitors took out all the podium positions in a car rally which came to an end in Millicent recently after a week of competition organised by Millicent’s Upper Snuggery Racing Team.

Mount Gambier entrants Roger Saunders and navigator Brian Spring won the event outright in a Porsche with Craig and Catherine Cleggett, also from Mount Gambier, taking second in a Chevrolet Camaro, with Michael and Diane Holland from Keith rounding off the top three also in a Porsche.

The event drew competitors from as far away as Queensland, Victoria and Adelaide.

The seven-day event began at the infamous Collingrove hill climb in the Adelaide Hills.

High speeds were reached on day two and three with the 25 entrants competing at both Mallala and The Bend race tracks where some cars reached speeds of more than 230kms down the main straight at The Bend.

Between motorsport events, competitors were challenged with observation and navigation events.

The maps provided for the navigation event were intentionally out-of-date and didn’t necessarily represent the current road network – making the section especially challenging.

Adhering to the road rules during these events, some competitors took the wrong route or entered a designated point the wrong way – losing points.

The first event of the rally in the Limestone Coast was at the Beachport Scenic Drive near the end of the week of competition.

The closed road event required two runs through the Scenic Drive where the driver and navigator were required to match the time of the second run as close as possible to the first.

On day six, competition was a lot faster with a course layout at the Millicent airport with the Porsches of Saunders and Holland dominating on the day over the brutal grunt of the Cleggett supercharged Camaro.

The event finished last Saturday at the Millicent saleyards with some spirited driving around several set courses.

The only car damage for the week-long adventure was a scratched rim during an event and two extremely low speed accidents in car parks while parking.
