THE Mount Gambier branch of the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) has a new horse for a carriage driving program.

RDA president Robyn Reiter said the program began in 2016, with a maximum of five people at a time able to participate.

“Our new carriage driving horse, Laura, has some experience of driving the streets of Melbourne with tourists,” Ms Reiter said.

“She is now going to be a carriage driving horse as well as a part of the unmounted program.”

Ms Reiter added that carriage driving will be one of many activities offered in the unmounted Pegasus program, which is offered to clients who wish to learn about horse care and unmounted preparation.

The Lions Club of Mount Gambier also contributed to the Mount Gambier RDA by planning, building and installing an outdoor horse mounting platform specifically designed for people in wheelchairs.

The RDA received a grant of $1500 from the Stand Like Stone Foundation to cover the cost of materials used for construction.

“The platform was certainly needed because some riders and horses prefer to work outdoors rather than in the arena,” Ms Reiter said.

Members of the Lions Club have maintained a long-lasting relationship with the RDA and continue to assist in maintaining the grounds and the arena.
