WILDLIFE carer and Mount Gambier’s Young Citizen of the Year, Julia Dangerfield was presented with a State Australia Day Young Citizen of the Year commendation at Government House in Adelaide on Wednesday night.

Ms Dangerfield’s award was one of 18 presented by the Governor, Frances Adamson AC.

Speaking to The Border Watch about her latest award, Ms Dangerfield said the commendation still did not feel real.

“It is a little bit embarrassing but it is nice there is recognition for those doing wildlife care and rescue,” Ms Dangerfield said.

“I wasn’t expecting this at all, I was surprised enough to get the Mount Gambier award let alone a commendation for South Australia.

“It is great to get that recognition to show people what we do as many people don’t realise we don’t get paid and people are usually shocked to find that out.

“There is always a need for more volunteers, if it is something people are interested in that is great and our local carers are always welcoming,” she said.

Also among the awardees on Wednesday night at Government House in Adelaide was another resident of the Limestone Coast, being David Thomas OAM, of Robe.

Mr Thomas received a State Citizen of the Year commendation.
