Sailing Club success

FULL SPEED AHEAD: Port MacDonnell Sailing Club's Mirage boat gears up for a stellar race.

SIX boats took to the water over the weekend to compete in the final races of 2021 for the Port MacDonnell SailingClub.

The course was set by race officer Nick Watson before rescue boat operators Jim Slattery and Graham Westgarth took him to shore to allow him to compete.

Single person Sabre Billy was first to cross the start line, with new boat to the club Pinky crossing second.

From there the boats chased each other around the course before Harmony was able to pull ahead and take out line honours for the first race.

The second race was contested in similar conditions to the first, with Austral 20 Mirage crossing the line first and Billy following in second position.

Despite the boats taking longer to sail the course the second time around, Harmony was still able to take the lead and collect line honours for the last race of 2021.

Commodore and new skipper Jennifer Jones, won her first races on both yardstick and class basic handicap on Saturday.

As per tradition, the skipper and her crew were dunked in the icy waters of Port MacDonnell to celebrate the achievement.

Luckily they were able to warm up with a hot shower before the club’s Christmas dinner which was enjoyed by about 30 people at the club house.

The next race for the Port MacDonnell sailing club will be on January 29 with the public welcome to watch and join in the fun.
