UNIQUE performance opportunities and professional development activities for local live music communities will be heightened with the inception of the Live and Local initiative.

The first for its kind for regional South Australia, a band of several workers within the arts and entertainment sector have come together to support the growth of venue-based live music.

Musicians will participate in a range of performances in a unique venue setting in an effort to further push and develop relationships within the community.

Mount Gambier City Council live music project officer Monica Hart said the group was made from local musicians and venue representatives all of whom were eager to ramp up live music within the region.

“We will host the micro-festival which is a really exciting initiative and will activate two areas of Commercial Street in the coming months,” Ms Hart said.

“There will also be professional development opportunities allowing venues and regional musicians to have robust conversations amongst each other and artists from other regional areas.”

Ms Hart said the aim of the initiative was to raise awareness for artists and venues to support live music and create a more cohesive community.

“There is an amazing amount of talent here in Mount Gambier and such great musicians here and this initiative would allow for further networking and understanding between venues and musicians,” she said.

“The miro-festival is exceptionally exciting because there will be musicians and live performances in venues where it would not be usually held such as in gyms or other stores.”

Following the micro-festival – which is due to occur in December – a Live Local roundtable will be held with all information accumulated throughout the year contributing to a live music action plan for Mount Gambier.

Registrations of interest for the Live Local events close on Monday at 4pm with musicians and performers encouraged to apply.
