COORONG resident Rosa Hillam will have a second tilt at Federal politics after being endorsed as the Greens candidate for the seat of Barker at the upcoming election.

The Meningie-based Murray River advocate will face incumbent Liberal MP Tony Pasin at the next Federal election, of which the date has yet to be announced.

Ms Hillam ran for the Greens at the 2019 election, placing third behind Mr Pasin and Labor’s Mat O’Brien.

The artist secured 6.8pc – or 7229 – first preference votes to record a 3.2pc swing towards the Greens.

She said she was encouraged to run for Federal Parliament for the second time in order to tackle the climate crisis and water issues in the Murray River.

“I got involved in water years ago because I could see we were going to be in severe trouble and we still are,” Ms Hillam said.

“We need to make sure we have sustainable for the future and for our children and our grandchildren.

“We need to ensure that we can have fresh, clean drinking water coming out of our taps.

“Now is the time we need to change, climate change is upon us, we have this horrible pandemic… more than ever, we need to stand up and need to be counted.”
