PENOLA High School students will work with volunteers from around the district as part of a community connection and wellbeing mentorship program.

The program was sparked by school governing board member Anne Johnson and will link students with participating adults who share similar interests or skills for an 80-minute session on a weekly or fortnightly basis.

The initiative aims to develop and maintain ongoing, positive and trusting relationships between youths and adults in the community while enhancing students’ emotional wellbeing and learning.

Ms Johnson said she understood the importance of community connections, stating the program would be beneficial for both students and community members.

“We have had several people put up their hands to mentor some students, which is fantastic,” Ms Johnson said.

Ms Johnson said volunteers would comply with necessary background checks, congratulating those who had already signed up for the program.

School principal Lesley Okholm said mentors would support students through demonstrating positive relationships, developing trust, respect and understanding of others, communicating effectively, working through problems and encouraging positive life choices.

“The aim of a mentor is to assist students of all ages to reach their full potential by bringing young people together with caring individuals who offer guidance, support and encouragement,” Ms Okholm said.

“With direct contact and involvement of families to be discouraged to ensure the confidentiality of the relationship.”
