Rotary appointment secures city conference

READY TO LEAD: Rotary 9780 2023/24 district governor elect Ian McKay.

MOUNT Gambier Rotarian Ian McKay has been appointed the 9780 District Governor for 2023/24, securing a major conference for the Blue Lake city in his presiding year.

The Rotary Club of Mount Gambier Lakes member and Group 1 assistant governor will take charge of the 9780 district, which spans from Geelong to Millicent and as far north as Swan Hill, encompassing 56 clubs and around 1600 Rotarians.

A key component of the leadership position is the right to host the annual district conference, which brings hundreds of Rotarians together to network and celebrate their achievements.

A Rotarian for just under 10 years and former president of the Rotary Club of Warrnambool Daybreak (2016/17), Mr McKay was proud to be elected to the coveted position and looked forward to the 2023/24 period.

“Personally, it is an opportunity to contribute to Rotary on a bigger stage,” Mr McKay said.

“It will give me experience in Rotary to see more of the good things being done outside of just the club or local level,” he said.

Mr McKay will now form a conference committee in preparation for the looming major event, foreshadowed to take place in 2024.

“That will bring Rotarians from throughout the district to Mount Gambier so they can both experience what we all know is great about this part of the world,” Mr McKay said.

“It is also an economic boost as well with the number of people that will come to the region,” he said.

“For the local Rotary clubs and Rotarians, it is an opportunity to have exposure to some of the projects others clubs in the district are doing, which we would often have to travel away to see.”
