ARTISTS will have the opportunity to have their works viewed by the first domestic arrivals at the revamped Mount Gambier Regional Airport as part of a new art competition.
At last week’s meeting, Grant District Council supported a staff recommendation to establish an Airport Art Competition and Exhibition, with the overall winner receiving $2000.
Prizes will also be awarded for painting, printmaking and drawing and textile and mixed media, while a $250 prize for people’s choice will raise the total prize pool to $3750.
In a staff report, council community projects officer Linda Hay said the competition showcased local talent and build a community connection to the airport.
“It is hoped the community may visit to view the new facility and the exhibition while enjoying food and/or drink from the cafe,” the report said.
The report stated finalists’ work would be included in an exhibition in the gallery space at the airport for four months, with finalists intended to be invited to the VIP opening of the facility in mid-November and finalists will be announced at the event.
The non-acquisitive competition will be for two-dimensional pieces no larger than 1200mm by 1200mm and must be presented ready to hang.
In recommending a budget variation for the prize money, council deputy chief executive Jane Fetherstonhaugh told elected members it was unlikely to cost council the full amount because of entry fees and commission on the works.
Elected members were unanimous in backing the project, with councillor Megan Dukalskis praising staff for the initiative.
