Century-old hall windows to be replaced

TWO century-old windows will be replaced at the Allendale East Hall, with Grant District Council supporting a contribution of $3795 to its management committee.

At Monday night’s meeting, councillor Gillian Clayfield moved a motion without notice to provide the Allendale East Hall Committee with the funds to replace two 110-year-old windows.

In moving the motion, Cr Clayfield said the funding allocation was a small amount in the scheme of things and the committee was a wonderful group to support.

Council chief executive Darryl Whicker said if the motion was supported, the funding would need to be allocated out of council’s operational budget.

He said grants were available for community groups to apply for.

However, Cr Clayfield said the group had used two or three years worth of grants to fix the roof.

“I would like to see a lot of our little communities we hear nothing from get some spending rather than the big projects,” she said.

“Allendale is one of the places which does not frequently come up in council.”

Cr’s Barry Kuhl and Brad Mann did not support the motion, with Cr Kuhl saying the out-of-budget allocation would set a precedent.

“By doing this, I think you are going to open up a can of worms,” Cr Kuhl said.

The motion was passed, with Cr’s Kylie Boston, Bruce Bain, Peter Duncan and Shirley Little supporting the motion and Cr’s Kuhl and Mann voting i t down.
