THE last remnants of the ageing Mount Gambier Regional Airport terminal were visible yesterday as demolition crews continue to dissect the structure.
With the former terminal now just a broken timber skeleton, the building is likely to completely disappear from the landscape within days.
The building i s being demolished to make way for a $6m modern and functional terminal, which is part of a broader redevelopment of the commercial airfield.
Kennett Builders and a string of contractors continue to work on stage one of the terminal build, which is on track to open next month.
Stage two of the project which is the entire terminal building – is earmarked to be completed in December.
Regional Express passengers are using a makeshift terminal at the southern end of the build site until stage one of the project is completed.
Grant District Council chief executive officer Darryl Whicker said the project remained on time and budget.
He said 90pc of the trades-people were from the region and up to 30 construction workers were on-site per day.
“Stage one handover is on schedule for July 13,” Mr Whicker said.
Passengers will be able to use a section of the new terminal building when stage one is opened, including check-in counters and baggage carousel.
