Land plan paves way for tower

A NEW Optus phone tower at Robe is a step closer.

After a lengthy period of public consultation, a new community land management plan has been approved by Robe District Council for the Robe Oval and Sports Complex.

Council chief executive James Holyman said the new plan provided the opportunity for the lease of land for an Optus telecommunication tower.

Mr Holyman said the tower would no longer be located in the centre of the town.

“Council understands that some members of the community would prefer for this type of essential infrastructure to not be located within our township,” Mr Holyman said.

“However, council was seeking to find the best overall community outcome by balancing the Optus appeal that would most likely have resulted in a tower in our main street, with the opportunity to locate it at the Robe Oval and Sports Complex with funds being invested in one of our key community assets.

“The change to the Community Land Management Plan has been done in conjunction with the Robe Sports and Recreation Association.

“It is important to note there is still a way to go before construction of the tower can start.”
