Options explored

MOUNT Gambier City Council chief executive Andrew Meddle said the local government body would continue to work with community groups impacted by the looming Community and Recreation Hub build.

With construction of the centre slated to begin in early 2020, the city’s Girl Guides, Scouts and Open Door Baptist Church will be required to relocate, with uncertainty about their future home.

Council had identified 42 James Street as a potential new premises for the church, however discussions continue with current tenants of the central site, including the Mount Gambier and District Senior Citizens Club and University of the Third Age.

In a statement issued to The Border Watch late yesterday, Mr Meddle remained confident council would find an appropriate solution for all involved.

“Council remains committed to working together with all groups in order to facilitate outcomes that are as fair and reasonable as possible for the whole community,” Mr Meddle said.

All current tenants of the James Street building have been asked to provide details about their use of the building to ascertain whether the Baptist Church would fit into the current schedule.

“Council is committed to continuing to working together with the displaced groups in order to facilitate outcomes that are suitable for their identified use and to reasonably address their needs,” he said.

“Our conversations will continue until we find a solution.

“Council will continue to work with all affected parties towards transitional solutions in preparation for the construction of the Community and Recreation Hub.”
