HIGHLAND dancers from across the nation will flock to Mount Gambier this weekend for the annual Mount Gambier Highland Dancing Festival.

This year’s festival, conducted by the South Eastern National Dancing Association, marks the 70th anniversary of the event, making it one of Australia’s longest running highland dance competitions.

Association president Margaret Reichelt OAM is expecting a high standard of dancing with 130 competitors entering the event.

All states of Australia will be represented with the exception of the Northern Territory and 35 South East dancers will take part.

Scottish Official Board of Highland Dancing chair Christine Lacey MBE will travel from Scotland and feature as one of the weekend’s adjudicators.

She is joined by Australian board president Ellen Sommerville who is based in Queensland, along with New South Wales’ Dianne Harrrison.

The competition will be held at the Mount Gambier Basketball Stadium from 8.30am on Saturday and Sunday, with tickets available at the door.
