DOMESTIC violence and women’s organisations are calling on Premier Steven Marshall to support a bill to de-register Wicked Campers plastered with offensive slogans, many of which promote violence against women.
Labor’s amendment to the Motor Vehicles Act seeks to ensure Wicked Campers and other vehicles with offensive slogans can be de-registered by the Registrar of Motor Vehicles, when notified of a complaint being upheld by the Advertising Standards Bureau.
Groups including Women’s Domestic Violence Services, Women’s Legal Service and Working Women’s Centre SA support the bill.
On International Women’s Day earlier this month, the Federal Government also called for action against the Wicked Campers.
Shadow Status of Women Minister Katrine Hildyard said the move was an opportunity for the parliament to stamp out behaviour which “promotes disrespect and violence against women”.
“Tasmania, Queensland and the ACT have already given power to de-register Wicked Campers in those states and the Federal Government has now also called for action,” she said.
“I call on the Marshall Liberal Government to support the bill so we can ensure our South Australian community does not have to put up with such offensive material.”
“It is shameful this government has adjourned the bill on multiple occasions.
“If the government is truly committed to ending violence against women and to ensuring respect for women, supporting this bill is a clear step they can take to practically demonstrate that commitment.”
