Vigil remembers young mother

A VIGIL will be held at the Cave Gardens at noon today to remember and pay respect to Mount Gambier resident Eden Kennett.

The 25-year-old died in the Mount Gambier Hospital on Friday after succumbing to injuries allegedly sustained in an earlier assault.

Limestone Coast Family Violence Action Group chair Sonya Mezinic said the vigil was both a commemoration of Ms Kennett’s life, as well as a show of solidarity against gender-based violence in general.

She encouraged all members of the community to show their support at the reflective event, which will also seek to offer hope to those facing abuse and celebrate survivors.

Tributes have flowed for the young mother, with Mount Gambier City Council paying tribute this week.

Mayor Lynette Martin told the chamber the “violent death” highlighted the issue of domestic violence “not only nationally, but also locally as a priority within our community”.

“Whilst this is a national conversation, this tragedy draws attention to the need for our community to work together to ensure ongoing support is provided to those in need,” she said.

The woman’s domestic partner has been arrested and charged with murder, but is yet to enter a plea or face trial.

If you have experienced violence in a domestic situation and need help, call 1800 RESPECT on 1800 737 732.
