Sobering alcohol theft sentence

A MOUNT Gambier man who stole two pre-mix cans of alcohol from a local bottle shop has been jailed for 18 days.

Matthew Scott Blenkiron, 35, appeared unrepresented via video-link in the Mount Gambier Magistrates Court to be sentenced for theft.

The prosecution said the defendant attended Dan Murphy’s on September 11 and a manager of the store observed him walk out without stopping at the counter.

After noticing suspicious behaviour, the witness checked security camera footage.

They observed Blenkiron entering the cool room and taking two cans of bourbon mix, placing them down his pants.

Despite earlier denials, Blenkiron admitted in court he took the alcohol because he was in a bad state and was drug-affected.

“I’m sorry about it and I’m willing to pay back for the alcohol,” he said.

Magistrate Teresa Anderson said the offending was a deliberate act of dishonesty.

She said personal and general deterrence were both important factors in sentencing.

“You need to know helping yourself to other people’s property is a serious offence,” she said.

Blenkiron was sentenced to 18 days imprisonment to be served cumulative on sentences previously imposed.
