Man fined for stolen items

A MOUNT Gambier man who received stolen goods and failed to notify police about the property has been fined $500.

David Rodney Douglas, 38, appeared in the city Magistrates to be sentenced for the offending.

The prosecution said the charged offending stemmed from an incident on August 1 when a man had items stolen while he was staying at a motel in Mount Gambier.

During the night, someone on a bicycle stole the items, which included a Global Positioning System (GPS).

Days later the GPS was tracked to a household and Douglas was deemed to be the man in possession of the items.

Douglas told police he had traded items with another man to obtain the stolen goods.

He assumed they were stolen and made no attempt to notify police.

In court, Douglas said he did not initially realise the items may be stolen.

After his friend investigated the items on the internet, he became aware they were likely to be stolen possessions.

He accepted responsibility for not notifying the police after coming to the realisation.

Douglas was fined $500 and ordered to pay court costs.
