GRANT District Council has referred a decision on whether it will apply for federal funding to further upgrade the Glenburnie Saleyards.
Elected members last week voted to defer a decision until the new council is formed following the local government elections.
The proposed project includes an upgrade of three ramps on the southern side of the site, installation of a new side loading ramp on the north eastern side and reconfiguration of holding pens adjacent the new side loading ramp.
Civil works were also mooted to improve B-double access to the side loading ramp.
The Federal Government’s Building Better Regions Fund was a possible funding stream for the project, which is estimated to cost more than $600,000.
But given it was an election period and the project appeared rushed, elected members decided to defer the decision to the newly elected council.
The make-up of the new council, which will see a number of new faces in the chamber, was finalised on Monday.
During the 2016/17 financial year, the livestock exchange facilitated 243,845 units of livestock, all by road transport.
This equates to thousands of truck movements on the site, which is leading to traffic congestion and multiple vehicles seeking to load quickly and efficiently.
