SOUTH Australian Country Fire Service (CFS) has announced the fire danger season will start in the Upper South East on November 15 and the Lower South East on November 22.
Acting preparedness operations director Brett Loughlin said the dates were normal for the Upper and Lower South East, but still urged people to be prepared.
“The South East has experienced a fairly normal winter period, so it is not as dry as other areas of the state,” Mr Loughlin said.
“However, with above average temperatures expected in the lead up to summer, it will not take long for fuels and soil to dry out, creating the perfect scenario for a large fire to start.”
The CFS is urging people in the South East to start cleaning up their properties now.
“It’s important that people start to reduce fuel loads around their homes by mowing or slashing fire fuels such as grasses,” Mr Loughlin said.
“By cleaning up your property early and maintaining it throughout the fire danger season, you will be protecting your home from bushfires.”
If you plan to burn excess vegetation, you should clear a four metre break around any piles, this includes grass and leaf litter.
“It is also important to continue monitoring the fire on the days following the burn to ensure it has not rekindled,” Mr Loughlin said.
If you would like to conduct a burn once the fire season has begun, you need to contact your local council for a permit and to check Environmental Protection Authority restrictions.
