City Council nominations open

THE candidate nomination period for positions on Mount Gambier City Council as part of this year’s local government elections open today.

Nominations are open to most community members and ratepayers over the age of 18 who are enrolled to vote in Mount Gambier.

Council chief executive Mark McShane said becoming a councillor was an opportunity to influence local directions and create long-term positive outcomes for the community.

“Councillors serve the community by listening to residents and local businesses and representing their views on council,” Mr McShane said.

“There are no special qualifications or experience required to be on council, but you should be passionate about your local community, willing to work as part of a team and keen to learn.

“If you wish to stand for a position on council, you must complete and lodge a nomination form which is available in hard copy format at the Mount Gambier Civic Centre or can be accessed online from the Electoral Commission SA website.”

Nominations close at midday on September 18.

Visit www.ecsa.sa.gov.au to find out more about eligibility and the nomination process.

Voting in the 2018 council elections will be by postal ballot.

Ballot papers will be distributed in October and voting will close at 5pm on November 9.
