City Council set for reshuffle

MOUNT Gambier City Council is set for a reshuffle given at least three incumbent elected members will not contest the November postal ballot.

Cr Penny Richardson, Cr Des Mutton and Cr Mark Lovett have revealed they will retire from council at the end of this term, while Cr Steve Perryman was playing his cards close to his chest earlier this week.

“I am unconfirmed for now,” he told The Border Watch.

A restructure will see council reduce its number of elected members from 10 to eight next term.

Longstanding elected members Cr Mutton and Cr Richardson have both held civic positions for almost 12 years and Cr Richardson’s three terms included a stint as deputy mayor.

Meanwhile, Cr Ian Von Stanke hopes his eight years of council experience will place him in good stead as he seeks a third term.

Cr Mark Lovett could not be reached for comment yesterday, but it is understood he will not stand for reelection and is pursuing other leadership opportunities outside of Local Government.

Nearing the end of their first terms, Cr Sonya Mezinec, Cr Christian Greco and Cr Josh Lynagh will all nominate for reelection.

Cr Frank Morello said he was still weighing his options and was undecided if he would seek a second term.

“I have enjoyed my time on council, but I am yet to decide if I will seek reelection,” Cr Morello said.

“I need to weigh up family and work commitments.”

Deputy Mayor Hanna Persello will stand for reelection.

Nominations to stand for South Australian councils as a councillor or mayor open on September 4 and close at noon on September 18.

Following a two-month campaign period, voting will close at 5pm on Friday, November 9, and the count will take place on Saturday, November 10.
