THE $2m redevelopment of the Mount Gambier Hospital renal unit is edging closer with the State Government confirming its commitment to the project.
Mount Gambier Hospital Health Advisory Council chair presiding member Maureen Klintberg said yesterday the community representative body had received a letter from Health Minister Stephen Wade.
“Mr Wade has informed us of the government’s commitment to proceed with the upgrade of the renal dialysis unit at our hospital and architects are visiting the site this week to further develop the plans for the new unit,” Ms Klintberg said.
She said the project demonstrated the importance of the community rallying behind the hospital and fundraising events.
This follows $50,000 being raised by the Bollywood Ball last year for the project.
The redevelopment is expected to get under way this financial year.
The plans include expanding the number of chairs from four to six, as well as increasing the size of the unit.
The project followed a community grassroots campaign calling for the upgrade, which resulted in a bipartisan commitment ahead of the state election in March.
