Meeting clears air over Mount Gambier service

Airline ‘breakthrough’
Fare go: High costs barrier to travel
Airport costs under scrutiny

MEMBER for Mount Gambier Troy Bell has hailed a meeting with Rex Airlines as a positive step for the community of Mount Gambier, which could potentially lead to lower airfares being offered by the regional carrier.

The meeting was held yesterday in Mount Gambier with representatives from Rex, Member for Barker Tony Pasin, Mr Bell, Grant District Mayor Richard Sage and chief executive David Singe, together with other community stakeholders.

Mr Bell described the meeting as “constructive” and said it involved proactive discussions which could lead to lower airfares and potential reinstatement of services.

Pending approval by Grant District Council, the proposal involves an agreement between the council and Rex Airlines to offer “community fares” – a scheme introduced at other regional centres involving reduced fares at set prices.

Mr Bell said it was a positive outcome for the city of Mount Gambier, which depended on the carrier’s services.

“Rex provides a vital link to Melbourne and Adelaide, which Mount Gambier residents, businesses and industries rely upon,” he said.

“Should it be given the green light, the airline’s community fares offer will be a substantial win for the community of Mount Gambier and fuller planes could potentially lead to the reinstatement of services and even greater fare reductions in the future.”

The news came as a senate inquiry into the operation, regulation and funding of air route services in regional communities held a public hearing in Mount Gambier.

After years of community debate around the carrier’s pricing and services, Mr Bell said it was time for a resolution.

“It’s important to recognise the valuable services Rex has provided to the city of Mount Gambier for many years and we look forward to continuing this relationship into the future,” he said.

“Now is a time for all levels of government to work together with Rex to achieve outcomes which benefit the whole community.”

The State Government has been a major contributor towards the Mount Gambier Airport upgrade, committing more than $4m towards the project.
