Public to shape sports centre

MOUNT Gambier City Council is seeking applications from community members interested in joining a reference group to inform the design of a proposed multi-million-dollar sports and recreation centre.

The regional sport and recreation centre community reference group will provide input into the design, functionality and operations of the proposed $40m centre to ensure current and future needs of potential users are considered prior to commencement of construction.

Council will seek individuals to represent local schools, swim clubs, allied health care providers, retirement/residential care facilities, child care providers, community youth groups, sporting/recreation club representatives and other community groups.

“If you have appropriate experience and knowledge and want to have your say on this proposed community facility, now is your chance,” Mayor Andrew Lee said.

“This group follows the great work of the community engagement steering committee comprised of local sporting groups and other stakeholders.

“These groups and stakeholders certainly still have a place at the table as discussions about the project continue and are encouraged to apply.”

Planning for the proposed major project follows receipt of a community petition signed by 10,000 people in favour of the centre and council’s submission of an Expression of Interest (EOI) for $20m under the Federal Government’s Regional Growth Fund.

“Council has formed a regional sport and recreation centre committee comprised of Cr Ian Von Stanke, Cr Hanna Persello, Cr Frank Morello and Cr Sonya Mezinec to provide advice to assist council in decision making on matters associated with the development of the centre,” Mr Lee said.

“In addition, councillors and staff have explored other recreational centres in Adelaide and the Barossa to learn from other councils’ experiences with projects of this kind.

“Council also sought and received 21 initial expressions of interest from architectural companies this month to undertake the intermediate architectural designs and plans for the centre in a two-stage process, with those shortlisted to tender for the works.”

Applications to join the community reference group close at 5pm on July 5.
