TENISON Woods College student Jaime Spicer was the major prize winner at the South East Art Society Open Art Awards this month.

Her painting Through The Window was selected for the $1500 prize among the diverse works on display at the Millicent Art Gallery in an exhibition showcasing local artists.

The annual open art awards this year boasted 90 works from 55 artists representing Millicent, Penola, Mount Gambier and Casterton.

“It was really exciting to have a secondary student win the major prize,” South East Art Society president Robin Pellen told The Border Watch.

“We are always trying to entice younger people to get involved, so it was fantastic to see.”

This year marked the first time the awards have been held in a gallery outside Mount Gambier.

Tasked with judging the works were Riddoch Art Gallery culture and development officer Serena Wong, Millicent Art Gallery manager Janice Nitschke and Naomi Fallon of the Bordertown Art Gallery.

More than 70 people attended the formal exhibition opening and it will remain on view, excluding Mondays, until June 27.
