NOMINATIONS have opened for the police officer of the year award, which will be presented at the Royal Adelaide Show in September.

Brevet Sergeant Peter Phillips from the Mount Gambier station, was presented with the award last year in recognition of his volunteer work to develop the Beachport Surf Lifesaving Club.

Presented annually since 1978 by Rotary, the award gives the public an opportunity to recognise efforts of an outstanding officer in their area.

It may take into account group or individual work either on the job or while off duty through volunteering.

Anyone wishing to nominate a police officer can do so via the Rotary of Unley website.

The officer of the year will be announced during a ceremony on September 7.
