GLENELG Shire has launched its first ever National Reconciliation Week documentary showcasing the stories behind the region’s indigenous heritage.
The documentary, titled Demystifying History – Indigenous Culture in the Glenelg Shire, gives a detailed insight into local indigenous history from local Aboriginal leaders and elders.
Mayor Anita Rank said the documentary would help to better educate the community on the region’s rich indigenous culture.
“The documentary filmed and produced by local filmmakers features interviews with local Aboriginal leaders telling stories about their past and reflecting on the moments that have shaped our region’s identity,” she said.
“It provides a fantastic glimpse into the moments that have defined our community.”
The was officially launched as part of National Reconciliation Week.
Glenelg Shire’s week-long celebrations culminate today in a community gathering from 11am at Portland Civic Hall.
“Attendees will be able to learn more about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island culture through a traditional smoking ceremony, a performance from the Winda-Mara dancers and reflections from guest speakers,” Ms Rank said.
