South East Native Title claim progresses

MOUNT Gambier City Council has secured legal representation after the National Native Title Tribunal advised last month the First Nations of the South East had lodged a Native Title claim encompassing the seven Limestone Coast council areas.

Council had previously resolved in November to engage Norman Waterhouse Lawyers to represent council and other Limestone Coast councils on matters relating to the claim.

Norman Waterhouse has since confirmed it has applied on behalf of the Limestone Coast councils to become a party to the application.

The Native Title claim will allow the biological descendants of the Boandik people to continue indigenous traditions on vacant crown land.

Affected lands in Mount Gambier could include the Crater Lakes precinct, part of Hastings Cunningham Reserve and the perimeter of the Blue Lake.

Further information on the First Nations of the South East Native Title Claim will be presented formally to council as the claim progresses with the Federal Court/National Native Title Tribunal.
