Basketball: Season stars shine

YOUNG TALENT: Bulldogs Blue player Mitch Hunter was presented with the Bill Cook Perpetual Trophy for the junior receiving the most MVP votes for the men’s SECBL season.

THE 2017-18 South East Coast Basketball League most valuable players were announced at the recent grand final night.

With plenty of talent to pick from, close vote counts were seen across both the men’s and women’s leagues.

On-court leader for the young Bulldogs Blue squad, Dallas Jeffree, won the men’s MVP award for the season.

This was on the back of some outstanding performances which saw him use his experience to lift his teammates over the line.

He averaged 23 points per game.

Simon Berkefeld finished second for the men with 25 votes, while Panthers pair Brad Rathjen on 24 and Kyle Tipene on 21 followed.

State Under 18 player Mitch Hunter won the Bill Cook Perpetual Trophy for the junior scoring most votes in the MVP count.

He showed composure and maturity in his efforts as the “big” for Bulldogs Blue.

Tenille Gray of Cougars, after several seasons of finishing in the top three, took out the women’s prestigious individual MVP season award.

She is the prolific scorer for her team and consistently converts at high percentages.

Gray led the average scoring statistic for the league, with 22 points per game over the season and she recorded 20 votes to win by two from joint runners-up Brenna McKay from Panthers and State Under 18 Junior Emily Winter from Saints.

Cats’ Olivia Fuller came in at fourth with 14 points.

Winter’s stand out season for Saints was reflected in her votes total of 18 and she henceforth took out the Sally-Jane/Trisha Flett Memorial Award for the junior scoring most MVP votes.

She was pivotal in her team’s performances over the season, doing the hard work inside and leading the scoring.
