Land lease value to be independently assessed

WATTLE Range Council will undertake an independent assessment of the current lease value of land adjacent to the Millicent Aerodrome following the renewal of a long-term agreement.

Councillors debated whether to renew the lease of 168 acres of council-owned freehold land to BN & JN Bell and Sons at Tuesday’s monthly meeting.

Councillors were unanimous in commending the current occupants’ maintenance of the site, with Cr Dale Price recommending the lease be renewed for a three-year term.

However, Cr John Drew objected to the lease renewal, saying the current $19,505 yearly lease rental for the 168 acres was too low.

“I believe we have a responsibility to the ratepayers to ensure we maximise our income in a responsible manner,” he said.

“Not to say the Bells have not been responsible, but it’s probably time we open it up to other people to create a possible increase outcome for our council.”

Cr Kevin McGrath supported the renewal subject to an independent assessment, while Cr Glenn Brown backed a move for council to “test the market” and call for public tender.

“We do not know what’s out there and who might be interested in it,” Cr Brown said.

“It might be the land could be leased to several people.”

Cr Gwenda Lawlor endorsed the continuance of the current conditions saying a previous tender for the property resulted in one other bid.

The renewed lease agreement was adopted by council, with councillors Brown and Drew voting against the recommendation.
