A STATE Labor government would establish a $500,000 regional street art fund to reinvigorate country communities and create vibrant public spaces if re-elected.
Regional artists, groups and organisations will be able to apply for grants of between $10,000 and $50,000 for street art projects and installations on spaces such as buildings, silos and other infrastructure.
The announcement follows the success of silo mural projects in Coonalpyn and Kimba, which have become drawcards for the rural towns – attracting national attention and increasing visitor numbers.
Premier Jay Weatherill said street art projects had proven to be successful in improving economic and social outlooks in regional communities.
“Projects such as the Coonalpyn silo murals have attracted national attention and given visitors another reason to stop and enjoy what this wonderful regional town has to offer,” he said.
“Through our Fund My Neighbourhood program, four regional street art projects also received funding, demonstrating the high level of community support for these types of projects in regional South Australia.
“We are investing in artistic endeavours in our regions to support these wonderful communities and encourage even more South Australians to enjoy our diverse and stunning regions.”
Artists, groups or organisations will be expected to work with their local councils and land and property owners to gain necessary permissions before a project can receive funding.
